Suburban construction, site design and minor repairs require special skills and time. But it is also necessary to have a quality tool and accessories that will help in these processes. A workbench, with the presence of which any construction site will go much faster, will not be amiss.
Joiner or bench work bench - a special table for working with wood or metal. They have a solid and durable large surface area and tool boxes. Additionally, additional accessories for work can be installed - a drill, a vice, a circular saw, a small mill, etc.
Today we will try to make a joiner's workbench with our own hands (it can also serve as a bench), assemble and equip it correctly.
As usual, we will reduce the cost of our product as much as possible and even use old interior items and improvised means.
Joiner workbench from an old table
Almost any old table can serve as the basis for the production of a workbench. It can be a dining table or a nightstand, which you no longer need in the country. One has only to pre-inspect the piece of furniture so that it is not too shabby.
Initially, you will need to prepare the table - tighten all the bolts and nuts, screws and other fasteners. It will be necessary to inspect the supporting frame for cracks and, if any, to put metal or wooden plates to ensure the strength of the parts.
After, carry out light putty, treatment with wood preservatives or just paint with a special protective varnish.
When we have in front of us a slightly updated and durable table, we can proceed.
As usual, the surface of the workbench is a durable surface for a wide variety of work. Therefore, for the installation of countertops, we must choose high-quality boards with a thickness of at least 20-30 mm. We install them sequentially on the existing surface of the table, tighten with screws, trying to leave as few gaps as possible.
The new countertop should be slightly larger than the old one, have an inlet on each side of 15-20 cm, so that the equipment can be conveniently and reliably hung. In places of installation of electrical equipment for the workbench, you can put a double layer of the board so that the base is stronger.
Now we should take care of the drawers in which we will store the tool, fasteners, various parts. It should be strong wooden boxes on convenient systems, with durable fittings. We already know how to assemble wooden boxes and work with various forms, and therefore we will not go into details. It should only be noted that each element of the box must be treated with protective impregnation.
There should be several boxes, for example, 2-3 on each side. Previously, it is worth evaluating the placement and marking, so that the installed fragments do not interfere with working conveniently at the finished workbench.
The classic equipment in this case is a vice and wooden clamps. In addition, you can install a stationary drill of high power, a milling element, some turning equipment. But most often a workbench is built like a regular plane for comfortable work, while equipment is purchased separately. For giving enough drills, grinders, circulars.
The installation of the equipment should be well thought out in terms of convenience and safety, all fasteners are checked and tightened securely. If the equipment involves connecting to an electrical network, you should correctly calculate the power, wire cross-section, correctly make the connection itself. You may need to use the help of a qualified electrician for this work.
We combine carpentry and bench workbench
At the dacha, we don’t have much time, space and money to make two workbenches separately for work, although you may need both a carpentry workshop and a metalwork bench. In order to reduce costs and waste of time, and also not take up much space in the garage or shed by installing two bench tables, we propose to make two of them at once.
To produce a practical workplace, we will need to slightly increase the surface area. Perhaps this will require strengthening the base with additional parts of the frame on which the countertop will rest.
When the working part is ready, half of it should be covered with thin sheet stainless steel. It can be fixed with screws or special rivets. It is advisable to cover not only the upper plane, but also the end elements, which, incidentally, can be done around the entire perimeter.
DIY workbench from scratch
It’s good to have a place to start, but a little harder if there is no old table under the workbench. But do not get upset, because from scratch you can make a workplace strictly according to your requirements, higher strength and exactly the size and shape that you need. So, let's get started.
Materials for production
Before starting work, the following materials should be prepared:
- Wooden beam 50x100 mm for the production of supporting lintels, supporting the supporting part of the countertop;
- Wooden beam 80x100 mm for the support block and the bases of the frame;
- Wooden beam 50x150 mm for the installation of end parts;
- Planed board 50x200 mm for the assembly of countertops;
- Stainless steel sheet to cover parts of a countertop:
- Bolts, screws and rivets for assembly;
- Glue for intermediate fasteners, protective impregnation;
- Plastic or rubber pads on the support block.
The standard tool is a hacksaw for cutting wood, a hammer and a mallet, a drill and a drill, a chisel, additional tools if you are going to prepare special details.
Workbench Production Scheme
Additionally, we decided to provide you with a standard production scheme, maybe it will help you to assemble a high-quality “piece of furniture” for small work in the country.
Joiner's workbench: step by step instructions
- First, you should determine the size of the bench - its working surface and the supporting part. For example, we chose a surface size of 80x160 cm, and the size of each supporting part is 60 cm. The height of a workbench of 85 cm is the total size, so do not confuse it with the height of individual parts of the frame.
- Secondly, prepare a drawing (perhaps take something from the diagram above).
- Thirdly, put down the dimensions, mark and cut the material.
We recommend assembling not from top to bottom and not even vice versa, but in separate parts.
You can start with the assembly of the countertop, for the production of which we will need to create a housing along the perimeter (always considering the lap on each side). The body will need to be strengthened with a wooden beam, thereby creating increased strength.
Next, we proceed to the assembly of the support block, for which we chose a beam of 80x100 mm. It should be made stable from whole pieces of timber, since the entire mass of the workbench will be held on this basis.
On the support block we install the supporting part of the frame, and only then the countertop.
For connections, we recommend choosing bolts and nuts that will permanently fasten wooden parts together with through passage and clamping. Also, you can use carpentry glue for greater reliability and strength of each connection, apply it to the parts to be glued, and only then tighten the bolts.
During operation, make sure that the sizes are consistent and that the levels are respected, since in further processes related to the workbench, such errors can cost time, effort and nerves. Only on a quality workbench can you work with pleasure.
Workbench equipment, preparation for work
In order not to repeat ourselves, we suggest paying attention to the previous sections, since the new bench table can be equipped and equipped in the same way as created on the basis of old furniture.
All that remains is the question of installation and preparation for work. You will need to install the finished product on a flat surface, indoors. It is advisable to protect all materials with special impregnations, put pads on the support block or legs of the workbench. Now only the equipment that we already spoke about earlier, and interesting projects from you.

Share your ideas about the production of workbenches for summer cottages, as well as interesting thoughts about crafts that can be done with their help. For our part, we propose to consider useful articles on the site about the construction of rabbitry, drinking bowls for birds, feeders and houses for squirrels, birdhouses and other little things, in the process of creating which it will be useful to use a workbench.
