Brodiea: a starry placer on a personal plot

The homeland of Broadiea is the northwestern American coast. For a long time, local Indians used corms plants for food. They called them "Indian potato". You can eat tubers in baked, raw and boiled form. Interestingly, the flowers are also edible. They can be added to the salad.

Plant description

Brodiaea is a star-shaped plant with flowers. In length, it reaches 45-50 cm. The color of the flower petals is different: yellow, pink-lilac, white, blue. The plant is ideal for planting in lawns, rock gardens and flower beds. Flowering - from May to July.

Broadiae is found in nature in California - in valleys and on open hills. The leaves are narrow and long, die off at the time of flowering.

A bulbous plant is rarely found in gardens. The plant reacts sharply to changes in temperature and humidity. Broccoli corms are formed in autumn by children, with the help of which reproduction occurs. For good growth, the flower needs mineral fertilizing. It is important to fight weeds in time so that the plant does not grind.

Varieties of brody

There are several varieties of plants:

  • Crowned or wreath. It blooms from the second half of summer.
  • Broadia Mountain Maya. It features red petals with a green border.
  • Loose - tubular flowers, collected in a panicle. The color of the petals is lilac or white. It blooms in spring.
  • Queen Fabiola - reaches a height of 40 cm. Flowering occurs in June. The flowers have a blue-violet color.
  • Koningin Fabiola - flowers are purple, the plant reaches a height of 50 cm.

Landing Features

Brodiea is planted in September to a depth of 8 cm. The distance between plants should be 10 cm.

Broad breeding occurs in two ways:

  • bulbs;
  • seeds.

Bulbs are selected whole, elastic. Seeds should be black, shape - elongated. When choosing to grow a plant from seeds, be prepared that it will bloom in the second year.

Reproduction using corms suggests their preliminary planting in clay or wooden boxes in early autumn. Immediately after planting, watering is necessary. An ideal soil option is soil with a high content of compost and sand. For the winter, you can mulch. Spanbond covering material is suitable for these purposes.

How to grow brodya

  • Brodiea prefers light, drained soils. Lighting should be intense, but you should not place the plant in those places where direct sunlight. It is important not only to properly care for the flower, but also to correctly select the soil for it. The ideal option is a mixture of sand, sheet land and peat.
  • During the growth period, it is necessary to produce abundant watering. At the time when cultivation is carried out, making the soil moisturize, strive so that moisture does not get on the leaves. You can increase air humidity by placing open containers filled with water next to the flower.
  • Leaving involves maintaining the optimum temperature. Since the plant is thermophilic, the ambient temperature should be at least 15 degrees.

  • Top dressing is carried out during the period of active growth - 1 time in 30 days. For this, complex liquid fertilizers are used, which can be alternated with organic ones.
  • Transplanting does not benefit the plant, therefore, if possible, it is better not to transplant.
  • For the winter, brodiea is covered with peat and leaves.
  • If you decide to dig a plant for the winter, you need to do this in the fall. Bulbs are dug from the ground. They must be dried and stored in a warm place.

Pests and diseases

Broadiae may suffer from gray rot, ticks, fungal diseases, thrips, and nematodes. As a rule, all presented diseases are successfully treated with special drugs.
